ABA Bird of the Year

Today was an exciting day. I opened up my IPad after coming in from birding the blocks around my street to  discover that the ABA had announced its bird of the year. As many of you may know, last year was the American Kestrel. This year it will be the evening grosbeak! This are wonderful birds that show up only rarely here in western PA. They are also a species that I have never seen before. I had highhopes for this year due to the irruption south (hence the snowy owl I saw Sunday) but was sorely disappointed with no grosbeaks this year. Oh well, there’s always next year.
